Basic rules for deworming
To protect your pet from parasites, the owner must carry out deworming. Learn how to do it correctly and safely.
What is deworming, in which cases is it necessary?
De-worming is a prophylactic or therapeutic measure aimed at the destruction of the parasites that live in the animal. There is an opinion that it is not necessary to get rid of helminths of pets, because they live at home and, accordingly, cannot be subjected to parasitic invasions. But this opinion is erroneous: parasitic worms are able to live in organisms of any animals and get into them in various ways: by eating contaminated food, by contact with sick "brothers", during walks in the fresh air (parasites can be found in worms of stray animals lying on the ground, and fall on the paws of your pet).
De-worming can be prophylactic and therapeutic. The latter is carried out when parasites are found in the body of the pet and are aimed at their complete destruction and prevention of infection of people and other animals, constantly in contact with an infected dog or cat. Preventive deworming is carried out in order to prevent.
When and how often to conduct?
First of all, it is necessary to find out at what age to hold events. Puppies are advisable to start to give specialized anthelmintic drugs from three weeks of age, and kittens - from about five weeks.
It is important to observe the frequency. Thus, preventive de-worming in pets under the age of one year is carried out on a quarterly basis, that is, once every three months. An adult pet can be subjected to a less frequent procedure - every five or six months. But if the risks of infection with parasites are increased, then specialized drugs are given more often. The likelihood of getting into the body of helminths increases with the use of a dog or cat raw foods (especially meat and fish), frequent walks in the fresh air, regular contact with other animals.
Purify the pet from parasites before each vaccination, and in advance - for ten days or two weeks before the date of vaccination. And such measures are not only desirable, but necessary. The fact is that the introduction of a vaccine involves a significant effect on the immune system. And if the animal is infected with parasites, then its immune system is weakened, its functioning is changed. If the vaccine is done against the background of helminthiosis, it may not work as it should, for example, be ineffective or lead to undesirable consequences.
If you plan to be viscous, you should give the anthelminthic drug two weeks before it, since the reception during pregnancy is undesirable and dangerous, because the active substances are toxic and can enter the body of the fetus, provoking the pathology of their development. The male must also be dewormed so that the female does not become infected by mating.
How to de-worming pets? First of all, you need to find the right dose. It is determined by taking into account the weight of the animal, and the dosage should be strictly observed so that the agent works exactly, and its reception does not cause side effects and undesirable consequences.
As a rule, preventive de-worming takes place once, but if parasites are found in the body, the drug should be given again, 10-14 days after the first procedure. This is necessary to destroy all helminths, including adults and larvae, which hatch from eggs not exposed to the anthelmintic agent at the first dose (the active substances do not penetrate through the membranes).
Important! At the time of deworming, the animal must be completely healthy, so do not give the drug against the background of deterioration of health, exacerbation of chronic disease, manifestations of infections and other symptoms of changes in health. The procedure is not carried out after the surgeries, injuries, or delivery. Also, contraindications include lactation.
There are a wide variety of anthelmintic drugs, some are classified by animal types, others are considered universal and suitable for dogs and cats. Many manufacturers produce products for puppies and kittens, characterized by a low concentration of active ingredients.
Anthelmintic drugs have different forms: tablets, suspensions and even drops on withers. Suspensions have a liquid consistency, an unsharp odor and, as a rule, a pleasant or neutral taste, therefore, they are suitable for young pets or picky ones who selectively treat food and categorically do not use what they do not like.Tablets are most effective because they contain a minimum amount of auxiliary components, but not every pet will take them. Drops drip to the withers and are absorbed through the skin, so they are less effective.
There are numerous anthelmintic drugs with different names, but there is no significant difference in effectiveness. Some drugs contain the same active substance, but are available under different brands. The most common active ingredients are pyrantel, levamisole, piperazine, tetramisole, febantel.
The method of use is specified in the instructions, but usually veterinarians are advised to give the drug on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning half an hour before the first meal. Then the active substances will quickly enter the gastrointestinal tract and begin to act. The tablet is placed on the root of the tongue, after which the owner must clamp the mouth and lift the pet's head in order for the swallowing reflex to work. The suspension drips onto the tongue. If the animal resists, you can go to the trick and hide the tool in a small portion of food or treat.
Finally tips for pet owners:
- To understand whether it is necessary to conduct repeated de-worming, carefully examine the feces of the pet for the presence of worms, larvae or eggs. If they are detected and moreover move, it means that a fixing effect is required. And for more confidence hand over feces for analysis.
- If you have several pets, it is advisable to give them anthelmintic drugs at the same time in order to avoid contamination of healthy pets.
- Choose a form of the drug, not only suitable for the animal in age, but also the most comfortable to use in your particular case.
- Carefully study the attached instructions, paying special attention to contraindications and possible side effects.
Perform de-worming of the animal correctly, to rid it of parasites and avoid undesirable consequences.
