Planting Containerised Tree Peonies

How to Grow Tree Peonies

Peonies are graceful and beautiful plants to have in a garden. They come in tree-peony varieties and herbaceous varieties. It can be a lot of fun mixing up the varieties in the same garden. Tree peonies are sort of the "upper class" of the peony world. The flower you see comes from a young peony plant being grafted on to an older mature plant. They take several years to "take" and they are priced accordingly. Tree peonies are a little touchier about their space and can get quite large. The vary in price from around up to thousands, depending on the variety, where it was cultivated. The really good ones come from Japan and are normally "collector" types, very rare varieties.

Steps

  1. Grow a tree peony.
    • Ensure that the soil is well-drained, moist and rich. The pH should be almost neutral.
    • Choose a spot in full sun or part-shade (also read the directions accompanying your chosen tree peony).
    • Tree peonies tend to have strong, woody stems. This means that they don't need support and should not be cut back in autumn.
  2. Grow a herbaceous peony.
    • Again, select soil that is well-drained and rich.
    • Plant in full sun (unless the accompanying instructions direct otherwise).
    • Feed with compost in early spring.
    • Put a peony cage around it for support as it grows.
    • Feed again after flowering is done.
    • Trim to the ground in autumn.
    • Discard of the cut foliage in the garden waste to prevent fungal growth.

Can I plant the tree peony in a big pot?
    Top Answerer
Yes, you can. You have to choose a pot which is at least 30 cm (12") wide. The pot must be filled with a mix of half dirt and half compost.
    Thanks!
  • Question
Can a peony tree be grown in a pot in the summer and be brought inside in the winter?
    Top Answerer
You can grow a peony tree in pot, but you don't have to bring it inside in the winter. The plant is resistant enough to sustain freezing temperatures.
