The Surprising Reason You May Not Want to Throw Away Your Banana Peels
While banana peel-induced pratfalls are a comedy staple, the reputation of the humble peel could be changing.
It turns out, the peelcould be a nutritional powerhouse. According to AOL, the skin contains fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium and magnesium. Those benefits, in turn, could allegedly aid in weight loss, boost mood, lower cholesterol, a stronger immune system and more.
The Daily Mail also reports that peels have "high levels of lutein that can help protect your night vision" and "trytophan, an essential amino acid that's often prescribed to treat sleep problems."
So have we been tossing a superfood goldmine this entire time? Not so fast. TODAY reports that, "There's scant, if any, science to back up the claims [of the health benefits of banana peels]." While experts doesn't discount that there are nutrients in the skin, TODAY's report does say, "there aren't any studies showing that our bodies can actually absorb them."
So while it's not clear if the nutrients packed inside banana peels can benefit you, they're certainly not bad for you. Curious enough to add a banana peel to your morning smoothie? Don't use the entire peel since it tends to taste bitter, and it's obviously hard to chew.
